Announcements and Important Events
VERY IMPORTANT: Please make sure to stay tuned to all of the latest updates from the MHSAA at their Reopening Page. With the ever-changing landscape of information from the state, it’s important to stay as informed as possible. Check that page out here.
Facial coverings are required for all WINTER student-athletes and coaches every day as they come to and from practice and events. The following sports will be requiring Facial coverings at all times: Basketball, Competitive Cheer, Hockey, Bowling. Wrestling will be requiring facial coverings at all times except for competition matches. Boys Swim and Dive will be requiring facial coverings at all times except active swim.
You will have to participate in the health screening (bring your phone with you) and get a temperature check upon arrival at all athletic facilities. Please take proper hand hygiene precautions before arriving at our facilities. IF YOU HAVE ANY COVID LIKE SYMPTOMS, PLEASE STAY HOME.
1. Pre-Participation Physical Examination - Must be on file with the Athletic Office, or turned into coaches/trainer on the first day of practice. The physical must be dated after April 15th of 2019. NEW: This means that pre-participation physical examinations that were good for the 2019-2020 school year are still good for the 2020-2021 school year. IF you do already have a physical form on file from the previous school year, you will still need to fill out a new Health Sports Questionnaire and turn that into the Athletic Dept. before the season starts. That form can be found here.
No student-athlete will be allowed to participate unless this is accounted for. Please contact PC Athletics Secretary, Julie Morrissey, at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by phone at 323-5361 if you have any questions on the status of a student-athletes physical. You may also contact Portage Central Athletic Trainer, Rachel Leonard at email@example.com with Physical questions. You can find the MHSAA Official Physical form here.
Upon selection to a team:
2. Pay to Participate Payment - Student-Athletes are required to pay a participation fee to Portage Public Schools. The fee will be administered online in the Skyward Family Access Module under Fee Management upon a student-athlete being placed on a Roster. This usually happens within a week from the time the rosters are established. For information on how to find that fee online, see the PPS Pay to Participate Information Sheet and for a walk-through on how to pay online, go to PTP Online Payment through Skyward. Again, please make payment as soon as your student-athlete has been rostered! Once they start competitions, the Fee is past due!
3. Code of Conduct Meeting (if a first time PCHS Student-Athlete) – The Code of Conduct Meeting will not take place this year. Instead, we are expecting new student-athletes to watch the following video:
After watching the video, we ask that the student-athlete print off the Code of Conduct Form and turn it into the Athletic Office.
Specific Information from 2/10 MHSAA Update and 2/9 SMAC League Meeting:
1. Spectator Limitations at Events
Based on the current MDHHS epidemic order limit, we are allowed no more than 250 spectators at an event. Our league's interpretation of this limit is an allowance of no more than 250 "ticket vouchers" for admission at an evening of events in any one location. These "ticket vouchers" will be distributed to individual programs and then shared out to the spectators chosen by each student-athlete.
Specific Voucher Distribution for Basketball:
The SMAC Conferene has established the following protocol for ticket voucher distribution for the 2021 basketball season. Freshman and JV players will be distributed 2 ticket vouchers. Varsity players will be distributed 4 ticket vouchers. This is for home and away games. This maxes out the potential entry for an evening of basketball at 250. After watching the devastating effect this pandemic took on our seniors last year in their last season of participation, the SMAC, as a whole decided to do their best for those seniors this year. We are confident that in subsequent years our underclassmen will be able to return to full participation with their family and friends.
Wrestling COVID-19 Antigen Testing Protocol:
All participants must have a negative rapid antigen test on either the day before (done in conjunction with home weigh-in) or day of a meet or a negative PCR test within 72 hours of competition. All tested wrestlers would be able to compete without wearing a mask during the match; masks would be required of all individuals at all other times during meets and practices. We will be testing our Wrestlers after school each day before a match. They will do their rapid test before practice in the secondary fitness room attached to the weight room right next to the mat room. All wrestlers must have their Consent form and Code of Conduct form turned in before they are able to participate in the rapid testing.
Concessions and Food Tables - Suspended for 2021:
There will be no concession stand this Winter at Basketball, Wrestling, Swim and Dive, and Competitive Cheer contests. There will also be no food tables at Wrestling events this year for individual teams. Individually wrapped meals are approved for all sports and must be consumed in the commons at socially distanced from .
Winter MHSAA Tournaments:
MHSAA staff has been completely focused on the start of all regular season winter sports this week. Over the next week, winter sport tournaments will be finalized in terms of formats, locations and updated information. Stay tuned for more information to continue to be shared.
